The City of Ketchum is seeking a Director of Planning and Building to serve as Department Head for the Planning and Building Department.
Position Summary
The Director develops and coordinates strategic, professional, supervisory, administrative, and technical work related to annexations, planned unit developments, zoning administration, current and long-range planning, special land use studies, code writing and revision, and programs related to land use, economic development, housing, and strategic planning. The position works under the direction of the City Administrator.

Position Summary
The Director develops and coordinates strategic, professional, supervisory, administrative, and technical work related to annexations, planned unit developments, zoning administration, current and long-range planning, special land use studies, code writing and revision, and programs related to land use, economic development, housing, and strategic planning. The position works under the direction of the City Administrator.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for the functions, outcomes, and public perception of the Planning and Building Department
- Provides advice to the Mayor, City Council, and appointed boards and commissions
- Supervises daily operations, including assigning work and evaluating staff
- Facilitates decision-making by analyzing alternatives and communicating findings
- Represents the City at meetings with government agencies, community members, and organizations
- Prepares the annual department budget and participates in long-term planning priorities
- Studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and workflow
- Strong strategic thinking skills and ability to work with elected and appointed officials
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to manage workload, prioritize tasks, and work efficiently
- Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, ordinances, and technical documents
- Experience with economic development programs and planning-related issues
- Ability to conduct site visits and work collaboratively with the public and stakeholders
- Bachelor’s degree in urban or regional planning; master’s degree preferred
- Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in city and/or regional planning
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge and abilities
- AICP certification preferred
- Valid Idaho driver’s license and safe driving record
- Ability to pass a background check
